Meet the people who guide children here, and what that guidance looks like day to day.
In a Montessori classroom, the guide prepares the room and introduces materials one at a time, in sequence. She shows a child how to arrange colored rectangles from darkest to lightest, then steps back. Mastery comes through exploration, imitation, repetition, and trial and error. By observing closely, she knows when to offer guidance and when to present the next lesson.
Ms. Rebekah Carswell is Head of School. She joined OCC in 2013 and spent nine years as a Toddler Teacher before moving into administration. She has worked in Primary classrooms, coordinated the after school program, and trained as a Montessori Infant and Toddler guide. She is a graduate of Juniata College.
Ms. Patty Schmidt is Office Administrator. She joined OCC in 2023 and moved to Bellefonte after living in the Northeast. She has spent decades working with youth of all ages, from infant through high school, and previously worked as an Office Administrator for a distance-learning school. She handles questions families bring to the front office.
Ms. Jessica Silva works in Student Services. She joined OCC in 2025 and is originally from Brazil. She was connected to OCC in 2019 as an Au Pair for an alumni family, and worked four years as a daycare teacher for infants through four-year-olds. Her son Louis attends OCC.
Mr. Satch Mantz is the OCC Chef. He trained at The Culinary Institute of America and prepares food for students and staff. He grew up as a Montessori kid; his mother, Ms. Lynn, owned and taught at Montessori School of the Nittany Valley. When that school closed, his family found a new Montessori community at OCC.
Pancake is the Lobby Ambassador. He spends his days lying on his basking rock, climbing around his tank, and watching everyone walk past in the lobby. He eats turnip greens and enjoys bugs for treats.
Walk through a classroom and you might see a guide in the reading corner with a small group and a quiet story. You might see her on the floor with one child, arranging colored rectangles from darkest to lightest. You might see children holding magnifiers over a leaf they found on the way in. The guide demonstrates materials rather than presenting information for rote learning.
A guide observes each child closely to learn their interests, learning style, and temperament. She watches for the periods when a child is most ready for a new concept, then chooses materials that will hold their attention. When a child masters a skill, she introduces the next lesson, which grows more complex. She adjusts the room as the children change.
