How we see children

We see children from six months through six years as capable and whole. Our work follows the Montessori Method, which encourages individual development. We help children build order, coordination, concentration, and independence. OCC is a private, non-profit corporation governed by a board of parent volunteers and community members.

In the rooms, children choose work from open shelves and settle into it. Teachers observe, then step in with a lesson or a word. Small groups gather for a song, a snack, a story. The day holds long stretches of focus, not a schedule of bells.

What you notice in practice

Teachers work at the child's eye level and follow the child's interest. A lesson is given to one child or a small group. Then the child practices alone, while a teacher watches and waits. Independence grows from that quiet attention.

Rooms are set up for children to move and choose freely. Low shelves hold real materials in order. Work happens on small rugs or at tables. The day has long blocks of uninterrupted time, with snacks and outdoor play between them.

How we work with families

At pickup, a teacher might tell you what your child worked on, or where they needed a hand. Quick questions can be answered at the door. For anything longer, the office can help you find a time to talk.

New children settle in at their own pace, with a parent nearby at first. We keep the first days short and familiar. Teachers watch for the moment a child is ready to stay longer. You can ask the office how we plan those first weeks.
